Lexington Selected as one of fifty-two communities in the United States for Thriving Communities Program

U.S Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $23.6 million in cooperative agreements with three National Capacity Builders in the second round of funding for the Thriving Communities Program.

The awarded National Capacity Builders will support a total of 52 communities in 35 states in helping them identify opportunities within their city to improve current transportation options and discover new ones. Lexington was selected as one of those fifty-two communities to receive support in the Thriving Communities Program.

The Thriving Communities Program is facilitated and funded by the U.S Department of Transportation. The program includes establishing a connective road network, building of new minor throughfares, collectors to alleviate congestion on main arteries, new sidewalks to connect communities, bike lanes and more. The program is also designed with the goal to connect all citizens to a public bus route as well as provide Micro Transit opportunities, which may include planning of future Transit Oriented Developments.

ABT associates, a consulting and research firm that aims to improve the livelihood of individuals and equity worldwide, will be Lexington’s designated National Capacity Builder. ABT associates will provide technical assistance, planning, and capacity building support to the City of Lexington to help build the technical tools and organizational capacity to compete for federal aid and deliver quality infrastructure projects.

Davidson County Transportation and High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization have agreed to work with the City of Lexington on the implementation of ABT associates’ recommendations.
