Brunch Raises Scholarship Support for Local Students

Organizer Robert M. Gilmore says the “Commemoration Mother’s Day Brunch” held May 9 in Thomasville was designed not only to celebrate mothers through faith, unity, and cultural connection, but also to support scholarships for local students.

According to organizers, proceeds from the event will help support selected students attending Thomasville High School, East Davidson High School, and Lexington Senior High School. Gilmore said the event was organized through Classmate 1973 Alumni & Affiliates Inc. with the goal of bringing together diverse communities while investing in the next generation.

The vision for the event was recommended by Deborah L. Gilmore, a committee member of Classmate 1973 Alumni & Affiliates Inc. Organizers said the program was created to honor mothers while also creating scholarship opportunities for local students through community support and fundraising efforts.

Held at Bethel Global Methodist Church, the event featured music, cultural performances, inspirational speakers, raffles, and community fellowship throughout the afternoon. Organizers said the event emphasized unity, faith, and encouragement while celebrating mothers from diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Semaj Pennix served as master of ceremonies for the event and helped coordinate the program’s performers and activities. Gilmore credited Pennix’s leadership and experience in music and ministry with helping create an engaging and uplifting atmosphere throughout the event.

Performers and participants included Kallie Potter, Miss Thomasville 2026; the Gibson Sisters of High Point; Awaken Celebration Band; Takiri Latino Dancers; Files Chapel Choir; Jennifer Tuttle Gentle, Queen Ms. NC Senior America 2023; and the 2nd Chance Band of Dillon, South Carolina. Students Tiana Hopkins of Lexington Senior High School and Briana Perales of Thomasville High School also participated in the program.

One of the afternoon’s most memorable moments featured 9-year-old Paris Maree Dow, who delivered heartfelt remarks honoring mothers in attendance, mothers unable to attend, and mothers who had passed away. Organizers said her words received a standing ovation from the audience.

Gilmore said the event reflected the organization’s commitment to bringing people together across cultures while supporting education and uplifting the community through fellowship and service.

Organizers said donations supporting the scholarship effort are still being accepted through Classmate 1973 Alumni and Affiliates Inc.
