THOMASVILLE, N.C. — JacQuez Johnson announced today that he has filed to run for the North Carolina House of Representatives to represent District 80, citing growing concern over state-level dysfunction and the real-world consequences it is having on families, educators, and public servants across the district.
“North Carolina is currently one of the only states in the country that has not passed a state budget,” Johnson said. “Respectfully, as hard-working North Carolinians, we all know that if we went to our workplace and didn’t do our job, we’d receive a blue slip. Raleigh works for us back home and when the work doesn’t get done, our communities pay the price.”
Johnson emphasized that the continued failure to pass a budget has tangible consequences, particularly for state employees and educators who are still waiting on long-overdue pay increases amid rising costs of living.
“This isn’t abstract,” Johnson said. “It impacts teacher pay, state employees, and the ability of schools and agencies to plan and operate effectively. As a former educator, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges our teachers and students face and delays and dysfunction at the state level only make those challenges harder.”
Johnson pointed to the recently released 2025 Education Law Center report, which ranked North Carolina among the worst states in the country for education funding and equity.
“That ranking should concern every parent, every teacher, and every taxpayer,” he said. “Our children deserve better, and our educators deserve leadership that is responsive, present, and willing to do the hard work.”
