Addie Walser: Motherhood comes in many different shapes and sizes

Amidst a lively and bustling supermarket, a new section has appeared. Strewn across the display are beautiful bundles of flowers, heart-warming cards, and charming balloons all dedicated to the mothers of the world. Celebrated annually every second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day has arrived. No matter how one celebrates, be it a breakfast of pancakes in bed, a day trip to a salon, or a simple “I love you” paired with a card and flowers, Mother’s Day celebrations are all meant to do one thing: commemorate the maternal women in one’s life. 

Motherhood comes in many different shapes and sizes. A mother’s love is an incredibly unique and personal experience for each and every individual, very distinctive from one another yet connected by the bonds of love and trust. A mother isn’t always someone who has given birth to you. A mother can be someone who has loved and raised you, cherished you through hardships and supported you unwaveringly. Whether that be another family member, someone unrelated to you, or even a previous stranger who has taken you in.

All throughout Davidson County, so many mothers work tirelessly every day to provide for their families. In an effort to give them a bit of respite, a large number of businesses have offered the mothers of Davidson County promotions and events in celebration. From wellness treatments and personal training sessions at the YMCA for a discounted price to a fun, hands-on candle making experience accompanied with quality craft beer at the Goose and the Monkey Brewhouse at 401 S Railroad Street. With the wide variety of experiences, there is sure to be something for everyone. 

This Sunday, take a moment to celebrate your mother, a motherly figure, or yourself. Celebrate the unconditional love and care given to you through maternal love or celebrate yourself and your accomplishments as a mother. Recognize the accomplishments of those around you or yourself have achieved through motherhood. The tremendous patience and devotion required is no easy feat, acknowledge that and celebrate with love.
