Local Fire Departments Urge Residents to Prepare Ahead of Weekend Winter Storm

With a winter storm expected to move into the area this weekend, local fire departments are urging residents to take steps now to stay safe and prevent home fires.

Fire officials remind residents to make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly before the storm arrives. Cold weather often leads to increased use of space heaters and alternative heat sources, which can raise the risk of fires if not used carefully.

Fire departments stress the importance of using space heaters safely. Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, blankets and curtains. Heaters should always be placed on a flat surface and never left unattended.

Residents are also warned never to use generators, grills or outdoor cooking equipment inside the home or garage, even if doors or windows are open. These devices can produce deadly carbon monoxide.

If power outages occur, fire officials recommend using flashlights instead of candles to reduce the risk of accidental fires. Extra batteries should be kept on hand, along with a charged phone if possible.

“A little preparation now can help prevent fires and keep families safe during the storm,” fire officials said.

As temperatures drop and winter weather approaches, local fire departments encourage everyone to take precautions, stay aware and look out for neighbors who may need help.

Stay warm. Stay safe!.
