Lexington Book Festival: Meet Lexington Book Festival author Jaki Shelton Green
Jaki Shelton Green is currently the ninth Poet Laureate of North Carolina. In 2022, she was recognized by the Forbes Magazine 50 Over 50 Lifestyle List, 2021 UNC Chapel Hill Frank B. Hanes Writer in Residence, 2019 Academy of American Poet Laureate Fellow, 2019 NC Humanities Council Caldwell Award, 2014 NC Literary Hall of Fame Inductee, 2009 NC Piedmont Laureate appointment, and 2003 recipient of the NC Award for Literature. She recently retired from teaching Documentary Poetry at the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies.
Jaki Shelton Green is the author of ten poetry publications and vinyl and CD recordings. She serves as poetry editor for WALTER Magazine and the Poet Laureate in Residence for the NC Museum of Art. Her poetry has been commissioned, performed, and translated into film and paintings by visual artists, dance companies, composers, and musicians, including Flutronix, the Cincinnati Symphony, The Arts Club of Chicago, The NY Girls Choir, and the Chicago Sinfonietta. In 2024, The Mint Museum of Charlotte curated a multi-media installation of her long poem, The Communion of White Dresses, in collaboration with artist Monique Luck. Jaki Shelton Green owns SistaWRITE, a business providing writing retreats across the United States, Northern Africa, Ireland, and France.
