SCAM ALERT: Sheriff says Detention Centers will not call to payment on ankle monitors

SCAM ALERT: Sheriff says Detention Centers will not call to payment on ankle monitors

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office have received reports that someone is making calls to our citizens who have relatives in our Detention Center. They are claiming they are Detention Officers and asking for payment for ankle monitors. The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office would never ask citizens to pay for ankle monitors. Please be aware these people are committing fraud. Please remain alert and take steps to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

• To reduce your risk, NEVER send money in the form of cash, gift cards, prepaid cards, money orders or cashier’s checks to anyone you do not personally know.

• AVOID responding to messages from unfamiliar individuals and do not click on suspicious links.

• Scammers often gather personal details from public sources, so DO NOT ASSUME someone is trustworthy simply because they know information about you or claim to be connected to your family or friends.

• Criminals may PRETEND to be law enforcement officers, IRS Special Agents, businesses, trusted individuals or they may invent fake identities.

• Be CAUTIOUS of unsolicited help, advice or urgent requests.

• If it seems suspicious, TRUST your instincts.

• Always SAFEGUARD your personal and financial information.

• BEWARE of “too good to be true” offers.

• Treat unknown callers as potential SCAMS or FRAUD, and always stay alert.

• NEVER share your personal information with anyone and use 2-factor authentication.

If you believe you may have been targeted or victimized by a scam, please contact the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office to report the incident.
