Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - August 25, 2023

Dear Friends,

I understand that many of you have been gearing up to get ready for a new school year in our district. I hope your family has enjoyed the summer break and if you are a staff member in our schools or have a supporting role in the central office, best wishes for a successful school year!

This week has been busy in our Raleigh office and promoting new businesses in our district. While we await the completion of the budget process in the General Assembly, I am moving right along with participating in community events, leading panel discussions and crafting new legislation.

Governor Cooper is continuing his trend of vetoing significant legislation this session. His most recent veto of two important bills occurred on Thursday. Learn more about what SB 747 will be accomplishing for voting if it is enacted. SB 512 Greater Accountability for Boards and Commissions, was also vetoed with the Governor's latest pounding of his Veto Stamp.

I was honored to be invited to speak as a panel member for the NC Association of County Commissioners' annual event this week. The panel topic was on Clean Energy, Land Use and Decommissioning. I was able to help educate the attendees about the guidelines and structure that should be considered for renewable energy projects. It was great to see many old friends from my County Commissioner days!

In other news from Raleigh, the newest park in downtown held a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Freedom Park is across the street from our office. This park was designed to commemorate the historic struggles of NC African Americans.

We have received word of another traffic improvement project in Thomasville. Please read below for details on the location and what to look out for in your travels.

Two major companies, Siemens Mobility and Nucor Steel, who are expanding in our area, held their ground breaking ceremonies this week. I am eager to see the job and economic growth that will occur as they begin construction.

While the State Fair is still several months away, the ticket sales are starting this week! If you purchase advance tickets online, you can save money from the gate ticket price. Check out the events and schedules below to start planning your trip to Raleigh for the Fair!

In Discovering the District, read about our famous local artist, Bob Timberlake. Mr. Timberlake has been a popular painter and furniture designer for over 30 years. He has a gallery in Lexington that features so many of his gorgeous works. Step inside, cool off and linger for a bit.

The weekend events around our area have much to offer. If you are seeking a kid-friendly event, check out the end of summer blast in Bermuda Run. If an adults-only gathering is more your style, visit RayLen Winery. Or if you just want to be creative, a floral class is coming up next week in Mocksville.

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at

(919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
