A Lexington woman was struck by a car and killed during the recent winter storm
At approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday, officers with the Lexington Police Department responded to a report of a weather-related accident on South Main Street at the railroad overpass near Wilfred Avenue.
According to officials, a vehicle was traveling South on Main Street and left the roadway to the right and went down the embankment towards the railroad tracks. The vehicle was being driven by Luis Alonso Briceno of Lexington. Two juvenile passengers were taken to Lexington Atrium Health for minor injuries.
Because of the ongoing weather conditions and its location, the vehicle could not be removed at the time.
The following morning at approximately 10 a.m., officers returned to the location of the traffic accident in reference to a report of the body being found near the woods down the embankment of the original crash location.
After further investigation, it was determined the victim, identified as Barbara Hartwell of Lexington, had been walking on the sidewalk on South Main Street when she was struck by Briceno’s vehicle as it left the roadway and went down the embankment.
The incident is still being investigated, and officers are conferring with the District Attorney’s Office regarding possible charges.
