St. Stephen United Methodist Church turns 155

The congregation of St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Lexington was filled with elation last Sunday morning as they gathered in celebration of the church’s one hundred and fifty-fifth anniversary which was acknowledged with a Homecoming.

The service welcomed back members of the church including former Pastor Rev. Dr. Dewey Smith who delivered an inspiring Sermon entitled “Healthy Roots,Thriving Branches”. A message that reminded everyone that it is necessary to return to the strength and connections of our roots. “Home is a lasting legacy that endures throughout hardship and storms. It is a refuge where we learn to take our first steps, a place where memories are made.” Smith eloquently stated with memorable and uplifting words that reached attendees and was also shared on the church’s social media platforms.

In the tradition of a true Homecoming everyone was invited to fellowship and share in a delicious meal which was hosted at the reception area of neighboring church and community partner, First Reformed United Church Of Christ.

St. Stephen continues to be a thriving community and spiritual resource in Lexington under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Arnetta Beverly, who is steeped in the history of the church because she is so deeply rooted in contributing to a percentage of it.

Beverly made history as the church’s first female pastor and continues to inspire countless lives, leading by example. Upon closing the service Beverly encouraged, “Let’s have an attitude of prayer for one hundred and fifty-five years past and for what God will bring us tomorrow.”

This has been a monumental year for St. Stephen United Methodist Church. The church was recently added to The National Register of Historical Places. The official marker is proudly displayed at its front entrance.

In an effort to reach the multitudes, the church has both a Facebook page and YouTube channel which broadcast the weekly services for anyone that is unable to attend in person. In addition, St. Stephen also houses Open Hands of Davidson County and in the words of Rev. Dr. Dewey Smith, I too agree that “St. Stephen is a foundation built upon a solid rock, it is a beacon of hope.”

Happy 155th to one of the heartbeats of our community!

Rev. Dr. Arnetta Beverly presents a special award to the oldest member of St. Stephen UMC, Mr. Lewis Michael. Mr. Michael will celebrate his 100th birthday soon.
