Still Making Plays: Catching Up with Former Thomasville Football Star Bud Ray

For many high school athletes, the roar of the crowd, the thrill of victory, and the camaraderie of the team are memories that fade with time. But for Bud Ray, a member of the Thomasville High School Class of 2007, the lessons learned on the field, the court, and the track have continued to shape his life long after the final whistle. Ray's story isn't just one of athletic prowess, but of a relentless drive for success, an unwavering commitment to his values, and a deep-seated desire to help others succeed.

Ray was a standout multi-sport athlete at Thomasville High, excelling in football, basketball, and track. Beyond his athletic achievements, he was also a stellar student, graduating in the top 10 of his class with an impressive 3.9 GPA. For Ray, this academic excellence wasn't just a personal goal; it was a non-negotiable expectation set by his parents. "Education was always a must in our household," he states, crediting his mother and father for instilling in him the seriousness of his studies. This foundation of discipline and dedication would prove invaluable in the years to come.

His athletic and academic talents earned him a spot at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC, where he continued to shine on the football field. He earned the prestigious Ronnie Lott Heavy Hitter of the Year award and was named to the second-team all-conference roster. After his time at Lenoir-Rhyne, Ray transferred to UNC-Greensboro, continuing his educational journey. He currently resides in Winston-Salem, NC, with his wife and their two-year-old daughter, who he credits as his biggest motivational push.

Ray's ambition was also fueled by the example of his family, particularly his cousin, Dr. William M. Phelps, a plastic surgeon in Maryland. He recalls a memorable childhood moment when Dr. Phelps introduced him to professional basketball player Vince Carter, a meeting that left a lasting impression on him. This glimpse into the world of high achievement solidified his own desire for success and instilled in him the understanding that hard work could lead to incredible opportunities. Ray also acknowledges the athletic legacy of his father and his uncle, Harvey Ray, which served as another source of inspiration.

Today, Ray continues to make plays, but his field is now a manufacturing floor. As a production supervisor at Cleary Clean Products in Greensboro, NC, he is in a position to lead and mentor his employees. His role goes beyond just supervising production; he actively coaches his team to adopt better work and lifestyle habits, helping them succeed both on and off the job. It's a role that perfectly aligns with his core belief in helping and uplifting people in any way he can.

Looking back on his journey, Ray reflects on the "tough days of hard work" that ultimately paid off. He is quick to acknowledge the coaches from his time at Thomasville, whose guidance and encouragement played a vital role in his development. For the next generation of students and athletes, his message is clear and powerful: "Never be content and always protect your morals and values, and whatever you put your efforts into, you should always take it seriously." He also wants to recognize Cory Holt for always acknowledging his family's talents, both in athletics and academics.

In the end, Bud Ray's story is a testament to the enduring power of a strong foundation, the influence of positive role models, and the continuous pursuit of personal and professional excellence. He remains grateful to the Thomasville community for helping him become the man he is today and is eagerly looking forward to seeing the new talent that emerges from his alma mater. For Bud Ray, the game is far from over—he's simply on a different field, still making plays and helping others win.
