On Saturday, December 30, almost a dozen plungers took to the chilly waters for a second year of fundraising for Davidson County Prison Ministries. The cold weather did not deter warm hearts. Volunteers greeted guests with hot coffee, biscuits and donuts. In turn, nervous plungers greeted guests and thanked them for their generosity. Ryan Short provided a lively mix of music for the second year at Lexington’s Elevated Wake Park on 220 Bryant Rd. The event generates approximately $3000 for the ministry.

According to interim warden Steven Niday, funds help cover the expense of a part-time chaplain’s salary at Davidson County's Correctional Center. The position is not funded by any governmental agency. "It's always great when you can get the community involved," Niday said. "Commitment for the community is an important part of running a prison. People need to know that somebody out there cares."

Programs include Bible studies and ministry for roughly 300 men. Cathy Robertson said the majority of residents served were scheduled for release in one to five years. The ministry provides hope to those seeking to reconnect upon release. "We are reaching a ‘captive’ audience so to speak that will be returning to your neighborhoods soon."

Plungers included youth from New Jersey Baptist Church, clergy and local politicians. "I think it's wonderful," said Lexington City Council member John Burke. This is his second year participating in the plunge, noting a need for politicians to be aware of the needs of the entire community. He was cheered along the dock by wife, Beth, and father, Dr. Jim Burke.

Short summed up his commitment to the project. "This is important...and reaches a need that is unique...not really talked about." Rev. Dr. Arnetta Beverly serves as pastor at St. Stephen United Methodist Church and brought her enthusiasm to the event. As she shivered for the plunge before an audience on Facebook Live, one viewer said, "Let's go and make a big splash."
