The Heart of Gym Class: How Ms. Gloria Graves Shaped Our Childhood

Growing up, gym class was more than just a period in the school day; it was a fundamental part of our childhood. While some might think of the usual sports like basketball or football, for many of us, it was the unique, memorable games that truly defined the experience. One of the most cherished games was jump the brook, a simple yet exhilarating challenge organized by our beloved gym teacher, Ms. Gloria Graves. The game involved jumping over ropes set at progressively longer distances. It was a test of skill and courage, and every time you made it to the next round, you felt a sense of accomplishment.

Ms. Graves, a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University and Walter Hines High School, was the heart and soul of our gym class. She started teaching in the Lexington city school system in 1991 and quickly became a pillar of the community. Her personality was truly special—she had a remarkable ability to make every environment fun and engaging, especially for children. It didn't matter what your background was; Ms. Graves connected with and showed love to every student. She had a gift for bringing people together, and her gym class was a place where everyone felt seen and valued.

For many of us, she was a source of unconditional love and support outside of our homes. Her kindness wasn't just limited to the gymnasium. I remember her often taking me and my friends out to Pizza Hut, creating moments that felt personal and nurturing. She was a giver through and through, always finding ways to show she cared. Even when she had to redirect us, she did it with firmness but always followed up with love, ensuring we knew she had our best interests at heart.

Ms. Graves’s vibrant personality and passion for teaching came from her deep-rooted family values. Coming from a musical family, she also enjoyed singing and playing the piano, and her joy was infectious. This musical spirit and love for people shone through in everything she did, making her not just a great gym teacher but a truly remarkable person. She was the proud parent of Will Graves, a retired professional basketball player who now runs the Will Graves Skills Academy, and her pride in him was always evident.

Thinking back, Ms. Graves’s influence went beyond teaching us how to play games. She taught us about sportsmanship, resilience, and the importance of community. She fostered an environment where we felt safe to try new things, fail, and try again, all while knowing we had her unwavering support. Her legacy is not just in the games we played, but in the lessons we learned about empathy, discipline, and kindness.

In a world that can sometimes feel cold and disconnected, Ms. Gloria Graves was a beacon of warmth. She was more than a gym teacher; she was a mentor, a confidant, and a community mother. Her impact on our lives is immeasurable, and her nurturing spirit continues to inspire us. Thank you, Ms. Graves, for all the days of care and guidance. You will always be the number one gym teacher.
