The Principals Who Make a Difference
In Lexington, a city where principals often come and go, there's a conversation to be had about their impact. From my perspective, I’ve seen many dedicated leaders try to make a difference, but in today’s world, it seems like their efforts are sometimes met with resistance from students who don't want to engage with a school's code of ethics. Yet, despite these challenges, some principals rise above, proving that their work is not only necessary but transformative.
I had the pleasure of working with one such leader, Mr. Joe Stone, the principal of Lexington Middle School. Mr. Stone is a modest man, and I had the opportunity to witness his leadership firsthand when I worked as an assistant teacher. Some teachers didn't know how to take me, but my intentions with the children were always pure. One day, a difficult situation with a student turned into an altercation where I had to defend myself. In the chaos, several students recorded the incident and uploaded it to Instagram.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. Two other principals rushed up the stairs, their expressions making it clear they thought I was in the wrong. In that moment, I felt completely alone, with no support from them and no support from the seventh-grade principal at all. But then I spoke with Mr. Stone. He was honest and direct, looking me dead in the eyes. He told me, "Mr. Martin, I honestly believe everything you're saying. I've watched your effort with the children." His final words to me were, "You are a good brother." That simple, yet powerful, statement gave me a sense of validation I didn't get from anyone else that day.
Since leaving my position in the 2023 school year, I've had the chance to see the ripple effect of Mr. Stone’s leadership. It's been a visual blessing to see the same kids who were in the 6th and 7th grade—some of whom struggled academically and behaviorally—achieve such great success at Lexington Middle School. A lot of those kids wouldn't have agreed with Mr. Stone's strict enforcement of school policies back then, but I truly believe they appreciate him more now. They've seen how his guidance and expectations led them to a better path.
Mr. Stone understands the environment he has adapted to. He realizes that to get the best out of these children, he has to give a little more. His community engagement is a testament to this philosophy. Every year, he reaches out to local businesses to arrange free hairstyles for students, organizes after-school programs, and makes sure the school has dedicated social workers. He goes beyond the call of duty to ensure students have the support they need to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom.
Mr. Stone also gave me several opportunities to help make a difference, whether it was helping with a project or just earning a few extra bucks by DJing pep rallies for the kids. These opportunities were invaluable to me, giving me confidence that helped me grow in other areas of my life. Seeing him walk across that stage last Friday was a powerful reminder that male figures like him are so desperately needed in our school system. Their presence, their leadership, and their care truly matter. They make a difference.
The Heartbeat of a High School: The Power of Passionate Leadership
In every community, a high school is more than just a building—it's a hub of dreams, a training ground for future leaders, and a reflection of the town it serves. While a school's success is built on the collective efforts of many, it often starts with the vision and passion of one person: its principal. When a principal is deeply invested in the students, their influence can be felt in every classroom, on every athletic field, and throughout the entire community.
Observing a school where the Dr. Jermaine Porter gives their all reveals a remarkable transformation. It's a place where the atmosphere shifts from a routine of classes to a positive and vibrant narrative. This kind of leader understands that connection is key, and he is not afraid to meet students on their level. By fostering a culture that celebrates student life and achievements, Porter creates an environment where young people feel seen and valued. This is often reflected in events that go beyond traditional academics, like a prom that feels less like a formal obligation and more like a true celebration of the student body.

This kind of leadership is about more than just setting policy; it's about building genuine relationships and earning the trust of the students. When a principal such principal leads with bold passion and confidence, it inspires that same passion in the students themselves. Porter helps young people realize their potential, encouraging them to excel in academics, sports, and the arts. This dedication helps shape a new generation of leaders, preparing them not just for college or a career, but for life itself.

It's a powerful thing to witness a community come together under the guidance of a strong leader. Dr. Porter's positive energy is contagious, spreading from the students to the staff and beyond. This kind of passionate leadership reminds us that the best educators don't just teach subjects—they inspire people. And for that, we are all proud, I have nothing but love for you and your fellow Yellow Jacket staff, Peace, Love, Happiness.
Best,
Thomas Martin
