Column: Lexington Swin Club pool celebrates 75th Anniversary
At the height of the summer, the sun’s heat bears down on us as we run across the pavement, excited and fervent to be the first one through the Lexington Swim Club’s chain-link fence. We race to find a suitable spot to put our belongings, careful not to alert the omnipresent lifeguards across the poolside. We make the most of our time there, playing pretend, swimming to the very bottom of the deep end, and truly cherishing our time spent there. I, like many others in the community of Lexington, hold the Lexington Swim Club pool dear to our hearts. Over the course of 75 years, the Lexington Swim Club has been solidified as a sanctuary within the community, somewhere where we can gather and connect as a whole, away from the chaos of everyday life and the responsibilities that follow.
Throughout my entire life, the Lexington Swim Club pool has been a cornerstone for my summer vacation. A place where I can go to simply relax, have fun, be a part of the community, and enjoy myself despite the blazing heat. Some of my earliest memories were at that pool, memories of spending time with friends and family and of truly embracing the joy of the summer. Something that has continued to stick with me throughout the years are the hours on end we would spend pretending to be mermaids. Armed with nothing but our imagination, we would play and simply enjoy ourselves. Encouraged by the friendly and communal atmosphere fostered by the Lexington Swim Club, the pool became somewhere lasting childhood memories were made.
The Lexington Swim Club has made a tremendous impact on not just my family, but other families all throughout Lexington. The Lexington Swim Club is simply “a fun relaxing place to meet friends over the years,” as Christa Weeks says, somewhere her children could go to on a whim with their friends and have summer fun just like their father did growing up. Built with care and attentiveness and maintained with virtue and a nurturing environment, the Lexington Swim Club has truly become a place to remember in Lexington and has offered multigenerational experiences and enjoyment.
The Lexington Swim Club is not just a pool simply there to swim and have fun, but a core communal facet of Lexington. A place to spend time with loved ones, enjoy oneself, and to connect as a whole. In lifetime Marlin member Jonathan Week’s words, “for 75 years, the Lexington Swim Club has been a staple in not just Lexington, but in our community.” If you wish to not only find an entertaining and relaxing escape but to also find a place that fosters personal and familial growth, the Lexington Swim Club is the place to visit!
