Unity Winter Shelter clarifies Facebook claims, confirms no beds currently available
Unity Winter Shelter for Men has issued a clarification following social media posts that suggested beds were available, stating that the shelter is currently full and has no open beds. Several of the sites listed on the state's warming shelter page have closed or are fully occupied.
The shelter, operated by Unity United Methodist Church in Thomasville, serves adult men during the winter months only. According to Rev. Lisa Johnston, Unity Winter Shelter operates from November through March and is limited to 20 men over the age of 18.
“Currently we have no beds available,” Johnston said. She added that those seeking information about bed availability should call her directly at 336-991-6675.
The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis for new guests. However, returning guests may retain their assigned bed as long as they arrive by the 6:30 p.m. check-in time.
Unity Winter Shelter opens daily at 6:30 p.m., serves dinner at 7:00 p.m., and provides breakfast at 6:00 a.m. The shelter closes for the day at 7:00 a.m., but they do not have availability.
The shelter is located at 608 National Highway in Thomasville, directly across the road from The Father’s Storehouse at Unity United Methodist Church.
Rev. Johnston said the clarification is meant to ensure the public has accurate, up-to-date information when sharing resources with people in need.
“We want the public to get as much information as possible,” she said.
Community members are encouraged to verify shelter availability directly with Unity Winter Shelter before directing individuals there, as capacity can change daily.
