Davidson County Veteran Larry Long Participates in Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Davidson County, NC — Davidson County Senior Services is proud to recognize local veteran Larry Long, who recently participated in an Honor Flight Network trip to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
Mr. Long, a Vietnam veteran and resident of Davidson County, was selected after being on the waitlist for nearly a decade, an experience shared by many veterans across the region. With hundreds still waiting for their opportunity, Honor Flight trips are limited, typically occurring just three times per year, making each flight especially meaningful.
During the trip, Mr. Long visited memorials dedicated to his service and the sacrifices of fellow veterans. Accompanying him on this special journey was his daughter, Kristi Leisson, who served as his guardian for the day, providing support and sharing in what many describe as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“The trip was awesome. I can’t even put into words how amazing it was,” said Larry Long. “What stood out the most was the welcome home reception at the end of the day. The airport was packed, people lined up three rows deep. After 58 years, it felt like the welcome home we never got from Vietnam. The Iwo Jima statue was a powerful and beautiful experience that left a lasting impression.”
Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transporting America’s veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor. Priority is given to senior veterans, particularly those who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
“Opportunities like this are incredibly powerful, not just for the veterans, but for their families and communities,” said Thessia Everhart-Roberts, Senior Services Director. “We are honored to celebrate Mr. Long and his service, and grateful that he was able to take part in this well-deserved recognition.”
Davidson County Senior Services remains committed to supporting and honoring the veterans who have served the nation.
