More Than 80 Animals Found in Poor Condition: Davidson County Couple Faces Cruelty Charges

Davidson County, North Carolina — On February 24, 2026, Deputies with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division responded to a residence on the 2400 block of Wright Road in Lexington following reports of numerous animals being kept in unsanitary conditions.

An investigation revealed that an unlicensed animal rescue, Clover’s Clubhouse, was operating from the residence, along with a grooming business, Wolf Works, on the 300 block of Cedar Lodge Road in Thomasville. Deputies found more than 80 animals in poor conditions, requiring medical care and in violation of state and local regulations. In coordination with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, multiple animal cruelty notices were issued along with an order to comply with licensing requirements.

On March 11, 2026, deputies executed search warrants at both locations and seized over 65 animals, which were placed with rescues or adopted. Some animals had been previously rehomed or humanely euthanized.

On March 28, 2026, the Lexington Police Department arrested Azure Hensley and David Hensley on outstanding warrants. They were charged with 1 felony count of animal cruelty, 27 misdemeanor counts of instigating animal cruelty, and additional local and state ordinance violations, including operating an unlicensed facility, hoarding in high volumes, possessing more than 6 unaltered animals. Azure Hensley received a $5,000 unsecured bond, and David Hensley received a $5,000 secured bond. Both are scheduled to appear in court on March 30, 2026.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Corporal C. Soles with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division at (336) 242-2105. Pursuant to North Carolina General Statute 15A-532, conditions of release in judicial proceedings are determined by judicial officials. Bond amounts are not set by law enforcement. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
