Davidson-Davie Community College Offers Weekly American Sign Language Course This Fal
By Antionette Kerr
An upcoming American Sign Language (ASL) course at Davidson-Davie Community College will do more than teach hand signs, according to the instructor.
“Our course introduces students into the world of the Deaf community,” the instructor explained. “Students learn basic level communication skills while learning the history behind American Sign Language. Students have open conversations with individuals from the Deaf community to really understand the culture and community all while learning hands on how to properly communicate.”
They added that learning ASL is about more than vocabulary. “Taking the step to learn American Sign Language opens the door of communication to people that are on the spectrum, suffer from speech disabilities, hard of hearing and the Deaf just to name a few. In a world made for the hearing, learning American Sign Language helps bridge that gap for so many.”
Course Focus
The class emphasizes the development of basic expressive and receptive skills. Upon completion, students will be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to expressive American Sign Language and demonstrate cultural awareness.
