Crash and fatality under investigation
Rowan County Emergency Management Deputy Chief Allyson Summit confirmed that “first responders from Davidson, Rowan and Iredell counties did respond to a single vehicle accident Sunday morning sometime before 9:30 a.m.
The crash, which occurred on I85 on the Yadkin River Bridge right at the county line between Davidson and Rowan, backed up traffic and drivers were rerouted onto Hwy 29. Witnesses at the scene of the accident, including firefighters, have said the driver was able to get out of the vehicle after the crash. But it is as yet not entirely clear how he ended up in the river. The truck he was driving remained on the highway. There are no reports that anyone else was involved in the incident.
Rescuers did pull one male from the river sometime later, and that person was deceased. His identity has not been released at this time. The investigation into the cause of the accident has been turned over to Davidson County Sheriff’s Office so I cannot comment on that. We are very appreciative that Iredell County, Rowan County and Davidson County teams all worked so well together at the scene.”
