Tonya Lanier Announces Candidacy for Davidson County Board of Commissioners

Lanier, a lifelong resident of Davidson County and former member of the Lexington City Council, brings years of public service experience and a sincere commitment to her community. She currently works as a legal assistant for a Triad municipality and is known for her steady, thoughtful approach to local issues. She is married, with one son and two grandchildren, and is passionate about researching, writing, and preserving local history. Lanier also serves as a lay leader in her church, reflecting her dedication to service, faith and community support.

Her key areas of focus include expanding access to safety; affordable housing; increasing transparency in county decision-making and Opioid Settlement Fund spending; strengthening health, recovery, and addiction support programs; and improving accessibility for residents with disabilities.

“I’m running because I care deeply about the people of this county and believe we can build a stronger future together,” Lanier said. “Davidson County has tremendous potential, and now more than ever, we need leadership that is willing to listen, learn, and work collaboratively. I want to help move us toward a future that is transparent, responsible, and filled with opportunity for generations to come.”

Lanier acknowledges the work ahead and sees this as an essential time for change.

“This campaign will take long days, hard work, and many conversations across our communities,” she shared. "I am committed to showing up, listening, and earning the trust of voters. I believe that by working together, we can bring positive momentum and renewed hope to Davidson County.”

She emphasized that humility and listening will guide her leadership.

“One of the most important qualities of a public servant is the willingness to listen—truly listen—to the concerns, hopes, and ideas of the people you seek to represent. My goal is to understand those needs and do my best to deliver.”

Lanier looks forward to engaging with residents throughout the campaign and working together toward a more connected, forward-moving Davidson County.
