Demolition Nears Completion, North Main Street Expected to Reopen Friday

The City of Lexington anticipates the reopening of portions of North Main

Street between Center Street and First Street on Friday, September 4, 2026, after final cleanup and

a safety review of the recently completed demolition work of fire-damaged buildings. This

reopening includes roadway and pedestrian access.

The May 19, 2026 fire destroyed the buildings housing Shoto Japanese Steakhouse and The Candy

Factory and impacted surrounding businesses. North Main Street between Center Street and First

Street has remained closed while crews secured the damaged structures and coordinated and

carried out demolition work.

“This has been a challenging time for our Uptown businesses,” said Business and Community

Development Director Tammy Absher. “Throughout the process, the City has worked closely with

those involved, remained responsive to our businesses, and done what we could to help move

things forward. Reaching this point is an important step, and it is a reminder of the resilience of

our Uptown businesses and the strength of the Lexington community.”

The City recognizes the businesses, property owners, first responders, contractors, and community

partners who have supported Lexington during the recovery.

Businesses in the area remain open. Residents and visitors are encouraged to continue supporting

local restaurants, retailers, and services throughout the Lexington Uptown District.
