Peace, Power, and Purpose – John 20:19–23

Imagine being locked in a room, not just with a physical door, but with fear itself as the lock. The disciples were hiding, hearts pounding, uncertain of the future. Then—without warning—Jesus appears. Not with condemnation, but with peace. What would it take for you to move from fear to mission in a single moment?

The Peace of the Risen Christ (v.19, 21) After the resurrection the disciples were behind locked doors “for fear of the Jews.” Fear had paralyzed them—just as fear can paralyze us today. Jesus walked right through the locked door and He spoke to them.  Not a lecture, not a rebuke—peace. This peace is shalom—wholeness, restoration, reconciliation with God. Jesus’ peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of His authority and love.  Jesus’ peace is a transforming peace that gives stability within the storms of this world.

The Proof of His Victory (v.20) Why did Jesus show the Wounds? Proof of His identity—this is the same Jesus who was crucified. This is proof of His victory—death could not hold Him, the devil could not destroy Him. The disciples’ response was that their fear turned to joy when they saw the Lord. Joy is the natural fruit of recognizing the risen Christ. Our faith is not in an idea, but in a living Savior with scars that speak of love. The wounds remind us that our salvation is costly but secure.

The Purpose of His Sending (v.21) “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” Jesus was sent with humility, love, and sacrifice. Our mission mirrors His—incarnational, relational, purposeful. He is transferring the responsibility of going out with the gospel from Himself, to His disciples. The disciples move from followers to ambassadors. The church is not a hiding place but a launching pad. We are not to be a holy huddle, a social club, a select group, a frozen chosen.  We are to be a mighty army, taking the bible as our sword and prayer as our shield and going forth to fight the demons and dragons that so taint our world and our culture.  Every believer is a sent one—your workplace, neighborhood, and family are your mission field.

The Power of the Holy Spirit (v.22) There is symbolism of the Breath, it echoes Genesis 2:7—God breathing life into Adam. Jesus is breathing life into His disciples, life and power.  This Sunday is Pentecost, this is the power of the Holy Spirit, imparted to believes, not for selfish entertainments, but for gifts to wage spiritual war, to tear down strongholds, to spread the gospel message.  This is new creation life—spiritual empowerment for mission. The Spirit’s role is that He equips us with courage, wisdom, and spiritual gifts. Without the Spirit, mission becomes human effort; with the Spirit, it becomes divine partnership. We cannot fulfill God’s mission in our own strength—we must daily receive and rely on the Spirit.

The Authority to Forgive (v.23) Not that we have power to forgive in ourselves, that power only resides in the shed blood of Jesus Christ, but we declare God’s forgiveness through the gospel. The church is entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18–20). Eternity is at stake—our message carries life-changing authority. We are called to be bold in proclaiming forgiveness in Christ, and gracious in extending it to others.

I conclusion we are to move from fear to mission, from hiding to shouting, from cowering in a corner to bolding standing up to the forces of darkness.  We are to never give up, never back down.  Jesus has got this and He has given us His Holy Spirit to ensure we are empowered for the fight.  The disciples began the evening locked in fear and ended it sent in power. Jesus gives us peace to calm our fears, proof to strengthen our faith, purpose to guide our lives, power to equip our mission, and authority to proclaim His forgiveness.

Where are you, still behind locked doors in your life?  Are you going to a church that is only interested in entertaining the goats, or a Godly church interested in feeding the sheep? Are you scared to do what Jesus is calling you to?  Are you to lazy, to in love with this fallen and wicked world?  Embrace Christ’s power, be a true Christian, fight the good fight, and make a difference.  There is no reason to be scared.
