From Track Star to Trailblazer: Whitney Holt’s Passion for Lexington Track & Field

For Whitney Holt, the path from high school track star to Middle School Coach of the Year has been a journey fueled by passion and purpose. Every step of the way, she has been doing what she loves, and now she’s channeling that love into a new and exciting venture: the inaugural Lexington Parks & Recreation track & field team.

Holt’s connection to the sport runs deep. A decorated athlete in her own right, she was a high school track star and later earned the title of Track & Field MVP. Her own experiences have shaped her belief in the power of the sport, and she’s determined to share that with the next generation. This year marks a significant milestone for Lexington, as it’s the first time the Parks & Recreation department has launched a track & field team. The excitement is palpable, and according to Holt, it's a collective effort. She highlights that everyone working alongside her is a volunteer, dedicating their time and energy out of a shared desire to see the program thrive and grow.

Holt’s inspiration comes from her own family, specifically her mother, Carolyn Curry, and her younger brother, Maury Holt. She describes them as her greatest influences, calling them an "inspiration to her, her whole entire life." This family-first perspective underpins her coaching philosophy and her dedication to building a strong, supportive community around the new team.

Her commitment goes beyond just coaching; it's about building a legacy. Holt’s ultimate goal is to elevate track & field in Lexington to the same level of popularity as the city’s storied football and basketball programs. To achieve this, she actively encourages parents to get their children involved, citing numerous benefits. Track & field, she explains, is not just about running fast or jumping far. It’s a foundational sport that improves coordination, provides valuable track & field education, and promotes a lifelong habit of exercising. It teaches discipline, perseverance, and the importance of individual effort within a team setting. These are life skills that extend well beyond the finish line.

The launch of this new program is a collaborative effort, and Holt is quick to express her gratitude. She extends her thanks to everyone involved such as Andrew Lance which he is the park & recreation director, along with Keyesta Jones which she is the athletic program coordinator and also helps coach and run the meets. Holt also thanks athletic director Ben Robinson of Lexington Senior High School to allowing the Lexington Park & Recreation to use the Feild. It's this community-wide support that will be crucial for the team's long-term success.

Whitney Holt is more than a coach; she's a visionary who sees the potential in every child and the future of a sport she holds dear. She’s building a program from the ground up, not for personal accolades, but for the love of the sport and the community. Her journey from track star to coaching trailblazer is a testament to the power of passion and the lasting impact one person can have on a community. As the new team takes its first steps, Holt's dedication ensures that the future of track & field in Lexington is in very capable hands.
