Thomasville Schools Set the Record Straight on CIS Facility Use, Challenges City

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement from the Thomasville City Schools Board of Education

Date: July 29, 2025

The Thomasville City Schools Board of Education would like to take this opportunity to clarify inaccuracies included in the City of Thomasville's recent press release dated July 24, 2025, regarding Communities In Schools (CIS) and the use of school district facilities.

To clarify, there was never a formal written lease agreement between Thomasville City Schools and Communities In Schools for the facility located at 19 East Guilford Street.

As part of our efforts to realign space and resources in response to the North Carolina State Board of Education's approval of Bulldog Academy as a standalone school, it became necessary to review and renegotiate the pre-existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Thomasville City Schools and Communities In Schools. These discussions focused on ensuring that all programs operating within district facilities align with our current educational priorities, safety expectations, and space constraints.

The school system offered continued partnership and proposed alternative space at Liberty Drive Elementary School to Communities In Schools. This offer reflected our desire to maintain proximity, continuity, and accessibility for the students and families served. The offer presented was never accepted and the district was informed by Community In Schools they would be seeking an alternative option.

Thomasville City Schools values the longstanding relationship with Communities In Schools and remains committed to supporting its mission of helping students succeed both in and out of the classroom. We are disappointed that this matter has been mischaracterized and believe it is important for the public to receive an accurate and full account of the situation and to understand

Thomasville City School's continued commitment to their partnership with Communities In Schools and all community partners who share our dedication to student achievement and well-being.
