More Than a Program: Chevon Burton, the Guiding Light of Project Potential

In the heart of Lexington, North Carolina, where community roots run deep and local heroes often work without fanfare, one name consistently rises to the top: Chevon Burton. For nearly a quarter-century, Burton has been the quiet force behind Project Potential, a program that has become synonymous with hope, guidance, and unwavering support for countless students. Her dedication is a testament to the idea that true potential isn't just an abstract concept; it's a living, breathing project nurtured by a single, committed soul.

When you speak to anyone who knows her, a consistent theme emerges. As one colleague described her, Burton is a "kind, gentle soul that's wanting the best for the children and always encouraging them to be overachievers." This sentiment isn't just hyperbole; it's the core of her professional philosophy. Since July 2001, as the Project Program Director at Lexington Senior High School, she has been a steadfast presence in the lives of students, helping them navigate the often-complex journey from high school to higher education and beyond.

Burton's own academic journey provides a powerful example of the very aspirations she instills in others. A proud graduate of High Point University with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Relations, her education focused on student services and community outreach—a perfect foundation for the work she would go on to do. This blend of personal experience and professional training has made her an invaluable resource, someone who understands the challenges students.

Her impact extends far beyond the classroom and the Project Potential office. Burton's commitment to Lexington is a holistic one, encompassing the city's history and its future. She is an active member of the dedication committee for the Enslaved Gravesite, a historical initiative that seeks to honor and remember those who were enslaved. This work showcases a deep-seated belief that understanding the past is essential for building a better future, and that historical memory is a vital part of community education.

What truly sets Burton apart is her remarkable accessibility. For students, she's more than just a program director; she's a mentor, a confidante, and a trusted guide. Her door is always open for college planning, scholarship applications, or simply a word of encouragement. In a world where students can often feel overwhelmed and alone in their post-graduation plans, Burton provides a consistent, reassuring presence. She truly deserves her "flowers," as the saying goes, for being a constant source of support and wisdom.

Her life story is also a beautiful example of enduring commitment. Together with her high school sweetheart Mike Cross, Burton has built a life and family rooted in Lexington. Their own two children are proud graduates of Lexington Senior High School, a testament to the family's deep connection to the community and its educational system. This personal history of commitment to both family and hometown reinforces her authenticity and dedication.

Chevon Burton's nearly 25 years of service as the Director of the Project Potential Program is more than just a job; it's a legacy. She has dedicated her life to ensuring that the next generation of Lexington students has the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to succeed. On behalf of the Davidson Local and the entire Lexington community, we extend a heartfelt thank you for her tireless efforts. Her work is a powerful reminder that true community leadership is often quiet, always present, and profoundly impactful.
