There is just something about Davidson County that just feels right. Perhaps I am a little biased. But, when I come home to Davidson County, I feel that comfort knowing I am home. Driving by Pickett School reminds me of the sweet teachers that made me feel like I belonged, even if I was the kid that grabbed onto the flagpole and refused to let go when my mom tried to walk me into Kindergarten.
Its that familiar bump in the road coming down Main Street in Lexington, looking in wonder at The Big Chair in Thomasville, and pulling into the gravel lot side of the Old Country Store in Denton on a hot summer day – with the dust coming up behind you – to get me and the kids a big ol’ scoop of ice cream and sit in the booth and enjoy the relaxation.
You know that feeling?! As you sit there with your kids and you listen as they describe school and sports and the important dramas of their life. You remember how the people in your life did things that made you the person you are today. Thinking of my English teacher from Lexington High School – Ms. Amy Bailey – the woman that I individually credit with not only pushing me to excel so that I was able to be accepted to Wake Forest, but to get a scholarship so that me and my family could afford to let me go.
That feeling is the kind that makes you want to do something for your community. Whether it is to join Civitan, Rotary, Lions Club, Kiwanis, or just give more at your church, Davidson County creates that feeling in your bones that makes you want to do more. It is that siren’s voice that calls you home after law school, that tells you to eschew the big law firms and come to work as a prosecutor for Garry Frank and the DA’s Office.
Many of you have your own stories about why you have your path, and what you have done because you feel that responsibility to give back the love that so many have given you.
That is one reason why I am running for your District Court Judge. It is an important position, and responsibility. But no more important than the efforts of the unsung heroes at Fairgrove Family Resource Center, Pastor’s Pantry, Hospice of Davidson County, and the many first responders that have saved the lives of countless loved ones.
Yet we can all do more, and we should. And we will. Because Davidson County, if we let it, can bring out the best in all of us.
Encourage others to feel that love, and to give more where they can.
