Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - September 29, 2023

Dear Friends,

The first day of Fall arrived on September 23rd! On this day, also known as the Autumnal equinox, the day is roughly the same length of time as the night. This day is the official start of Fall. The equinox occurs when the Sun’s center passes through an imaginary equator in the sky or space. I'm sure you have noticed the cooler nights. I hope you are eager for this next season!

While the dust has settled at the General Assembly after passage of the Budget, the Budget bill has landed on the Governor's desk. Governor Cooper has 10 days to sign the Budget bill, which would be during the first week of October. It automatically becomes law if the Governor doesn't sign or veto it by then.

Senate and House committees are continuing to work for the people of North Carolina by getting busy with the task of redistricting. Meetings have been held around the state this week to receive the public's input.

Medicaid expansion is beginning December 1st for those who will be eligible. This has been a long time in the works for North Carolinians. I know it will be helpful to many people in our district for their healthcare needs.

I am excited to see legislation I initiated this spring becoming a reality in our budget. Vehicle emissions testing will no longer be required for 99 of NC's counties. I believe this will provide a savings for vehicle owners, and I know you will appreciate a little extra money in your pockets when your car inspection time comes around.

Once again, the employees of Davidson County continue to shine. I enjoyed presenting accolades to the Registrar of Deeds' Office staff at county commissioners' meeting this week. It's great to hear how hard work leads to success!

If you like to keep up with polling trends, I thought I'd share some recent results from a survey by Meredith College. Read below to see which candidates are in the lead in their respective parties at this point in the election season. With primaries in March, we still have 6 months to go for voters to educate themselves about who will best serve their needs.

Speaking of candidates, a great opportunity is coming up next week in Lexington. Residents will have three chances to meet and speak with candidates for Lexington's elections of the city council, mayor and school board. I am happy to share the details of how you can be a part of the voting process.

The NC Sheriff's Association would you like you to know about a specialty license plate offered in partnership with the DMV. This special vanity plate has the sheriff's star emblem and shows your support for NC sheriffs. Proceeds from the sale of this plate will increase training and scholarship funding for sheriffs and their staff.

We have some big events coming up this weekend and next week. I can't wait to attend each one and see you enjoying time with each other! I am sharing links to the event flyers in the hopes I'll run into you there. First on the calendar is Everybody's Day, NC's oldest street festival in Thomasville.

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at

(919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
