Practice makes perfect for LSHS girls’ basketball team

Practice makes perfect for LSHS girls’ basketball team

On June 20-23, the Lexington Senior High School (LSHS) girls’ basketball team will attend the Sylvia Hatchell Beyond Amazing Basketball Camp in Myrtle Beach, SC. Hatchell is the former head coach for the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill women’s basketball program. For 34 years, the camp has provided young girls across the country the opportunity to learn and grow their basketball skills.

Robert Hairston, varsity girls’ head coach, and Tyrone Terry, junior varsity girls’ head coach, have arranged the trip for the team. Hairston has coached for over 35 years throughout the state of North Carolina. Terry has been a coach for six years and previously coached for five years at Lexington Middle School. They, along with the basketball team, have fundraised throughout the year to offset costs.

“We’ve had carwashes to help raise the money for the camp”, Terry stated.

Terry discussed this experience with the girls’ basketball team and is confident the girls will receive what they need to perfect their basketball craft. Both coaches believe the girls on the team will benefit from the camp.

“Attending the camp will give the girls’ a higher quality side of basketball,” Terry stated. “A lot of these girls have never been out of Lexington or North Carolina. This is a great group of girls and I know that this camp will enhance their techniques”,

There will be COVID-19 restrictions in place for camp. The girls will maintain social distancing and teams will not shake hands.

Currently, the teams are accepting donations. To donate, a check can be made out to the LSHS girls’ basketball team. They can be dropped off at the LSHS front office located at 26 Penry St.

“We’ve been blessed to have such a supporting community”, the coaches stated. “We’ve been able to share what’s going on with the team through word of mouth and our Facebook page,  Lexington Senior High School Girls’ Basketball.”
