Thoughts about high school and beyond from our intern, Sabita

My name is Sabita Jagnarain, and I am currently a senior at Lexington Senior High School. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to North Carolina in 2017. Moving south to North Carolina I never had high expectations, but through the years, I’ve realized how much I have here, and I don’t want to take it for granted. I like seeing things from a different perspective and getting to meet new people. It makes me a creative and social person.

It is my nature to seek out new challenges and be driven by my desire to succeed. Motivated and hard-working, I am dedicated to what I do. Having the opportunity to work with others and help others is enjoyable to me. I am excited about learning and expanding my knowledge of our community and being able to interact with others in the area. It has always intrigued me how people think and interact with our community and adjacent neighborhoods. I want to be more involved in my community and volunteer to expand my horizons.

At LSHS, many opportunities are offered to students and the internships have been going on for a while. Ms. Hargrave, one of our teachers at LSHS, offered me a place in an internship and I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to try something new and gain real-life experience.

As someone passionate about helping others and coordinating with organizations, I decided to pursue nursing and business management. Nursing is something I have always been intrigued by because I have taken health science classes during my freshman year of high school and I have loved learning about the medical field. I can see myself assisting patients in the future. Business management has always been an interest for me as well and I want to be able to pursue this career because I am drawn to working with individuals and to be able to coordinate with organizations to help reach their efficiency levels. From this internship, I hope I learn valuable work experience, get a feeling of the work environment, explore career paths and meet new people.

Journalism is something I have never really thought about pursuing, but I would like to give it a chance to see if it’s a career in which I can thrive. Exploring various work scenarios will help benefit me in the future because in the work environment, there are ways for an individual to behave and I want to learn those roles. As a result of this being a different environment to most places I have been, I want to feel motivated in the work environment. Exploring my career paths will allow me to see if I am suited for this career and to be able to consider both pros and cons. In addition, I love socializing and hearing other people's opinions on events and daily occurrences. Having the opportunity to work on and contribute something is exciting to me.
