Mayoral candidates kick off first day of filing for municipal elections

The filing for the 2025 municipal election started on Monday with several people registering at the Davidson County Board of Election to run for office, including candidates for Lexington and Thomasville mayor. 

Candidate filing is from July 7 through July 18. 

In the City of Lexington, Jason Hayes filed for reelection for mayor. He has previously served two terms, which comes up for election every two-year municipal election cycle. He said he wants to continue working for and serving the citizens of Lexington. 

“I feel like there is tremendous momentum in the city with economic development, jobs and growing our tax base,” said Hayes. “Our council has been really effective working together and I want to continue doing what our citizens want us to do. I have had the opportunity to learn so much about the city over the last two terms, and it has been an honor and a privilege, and I’d like to continue serving the community.”

There four seats up for grabs for Lexington City Council, they are Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4. Incumbent Jim Myers filed on Monday for reelection for Ward 2 and incumbent John Burke filed for Ward 4 

Thomasville City Council member JacQuez Johnson filed for the Thomasville mayor position. He said he is looking to bring energy and a fresh perspective to the role, as well as working with experienced leaders to move the community forward.

“Now more than ever, this is our opportunity to put Thomasville on the map and to reimagine what we think of our city,” said Johnson.  “It is important for the next generation of leaders to get involved; to begin to put our hats into the ring and show that we are qualified and ready to do the work to bring the community forward. I love Thomasville, and I want to make sure that the next four years are pivotal for where we are and where we want to be as a community. 

Doug Hunt, Ericka Sanders and Ed Craddock filed on Monday to run for Thomasville City Council. All seats for Thomasville City council are at-large seats and there are four seats available for election in 2025. 

Scott Morris has filed for reelection for the mayor of the Town of Denton. There are also two seats on Denton Town Council up for election.  

The three incumbents filed for the three seats available for Midway Town Council, Jackie Edwards, Keith Leonard and Robin Moon.  The mayoral seat is not up for election this cycle. 

Allen Todd filed for reelection as the mayor of Wallburg. There are two seats up for election for Wallburg Town Council. 

There are four seats available for the Lexington City School, Wards 4,5 and 6, as well as the At-Large seat. Incumbent Angela McDuffie filed for reelection for Ward 5 Lexington school board on Monday.  

Two people filed for the two seats up for election for Thomasville School Board of Education, incumbent Tiffany B. Brannon and newcomer Malcolm Richbourg. 

Election day for municipal offices is Nov. 4. Voter Registration deadline is Oct. 10, and early voting is from Oct. 16 through Nov. 1.
