As the new wrestling season approaches, the atmosphere at Lexington High is buzzing with anticipation. Head coach Michael McKay, a former wrestler for the school himself, is leading a program with a clear vision: to build not just great athletes, but great people. While the team faces the challenge of a new conference and the departure of key seniors, McKay remains optimistic, focusing on the talent that remains and the strong foundation of his coaching staff.
It was standing room only at the Davidson County Board of Education meeting on Monday when over 100 parents, students, and other community members showed up to voice their displeasure over the suspension of three long-time wrestling coaches.
There was no response to a request for comment from Davidson County Schools. It is policy for the school district not to comment on personnel issues.
According to a social media post on June 12, a visitor to Sliding Rock in Transylvania County stated they had to pull a boy out of the water and that the adults, identified as coaches with Central Davidson High School wrestling team, did not attempt to rescue him. Davidson County Schools calls the social media post “not completely accurate.”
Tyro Elementary has an 8-year-old second-grader that is lighting it up on the wrestling mat. His name is Keegan Bailey and his favorite finishing move is the double X takedown. He won his second state championship with USA Wrestling earlier this month.
