Davidson County Schools calls social media account of child drowning "not completely accurate"

Davidson County Schools released a statement on Friday addressing a social media post about a student reportedly almost drowning during a field trip last week.

According to a social media post on June 12, a visitor to Sliding Rock in Transylvania County stated they had to pull a boy out of the water and that the adults, identified as coaches with Central Davidson High School wrestling team, did not attempt to rescue him.

“The boy went off the rock and started drowning and the other person I was with got him out, but before she could get to him the wrestling team coach yelled and told him to get the F out the water,” said the post.

When they approached the adults in the group to voice their concerns, they were told to “mind your fkn business it don't matter" and the three adults started laughing and walking off, according to the social media post.

The poster said after this exchange, they wanted to contact the parents of the boy to make them aware of the incident because they felt the chaperones of the group did not take the situation seriously.

The social media post also included a picture of a Davidson County Schools activity bus and a group of boys standing at the water’s edge.

A statement from Davidson County Schools said while the post was “not completely accurate”, they were aware of the situation and no student was harmed during the incident.

“We can confirm that we are investigating this situation and that all of our students are safe at this time. Parents of students who be impacted have been notified, and school administrators are working with district staff to ensure this incident is handled appropriately,” the statement read.
