The Pulse of the Hospital: Lexington's Dr. Tramaine Young honored for clinical excellence

In the high-stakes environment of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or a bustling Emergency Department, every second counts. Behind the scenes of these life-saving interventions is a critical figure often invisible to the public eye but essential to patient outcomes. At UNC Rex Healthcare, Dr. Tramaine Young, PharmD, MSCR, BCPS, has emerged as a cornerstone of this medical frontline, balancing the rigorous demands of bedside care with the strategic oversight of hospital operations.

Dr. Young, who serves as the Inpatient Pharmacy Clinical Supervisor at UNC Rex, represents a new generation of healthcare leaders who bridge the gap between complex pharmaceutical science and direct patient advocacy. With a rare combination of credentials—including a Doctor of Pharmacy, a Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR), and board certification as a Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS)—Young has built a career defined by precision and community service.

North Carolina Roots

Dr. Young’s journey to the forefront of modern medicine began in Lexington, North Carolina. A native of the state, he has remained dedicated to serving the North Carolina community throughout his academic and professional life. His path through the state’s educational system is a testament to his drive: after earning his Bachelor of Science from Appalachian State University, he pursued his Master of Science in Clinical Research at Campbell University, eventually completing his Doctor of Pharmacy at Presbyterian College.

His connection to his home state came full circle when he joined UNC Rex for his residency, eventually rising through the ranks to his current leadership position.

Navigating the Frontlines

While his title suggests an administrative focus, Dr. Young remains deeply embedded in clinical practice. On any given shift, he can be found in the Emergency Department or the ICU, where he serves as a vital consultant to physicians and nurses. In these units, the complexity of medication management is at its peak; pharmacists like Young are responsible for reviewing medication orders in real-time to prevent adverse drug reactions and ensure that the most effective therapies are administered to patients in critical condition.

“His role is about more than just checking boxes,” noted a local community feature that recently named him a “Hero of the Week.” “It’s about ensuring that every patient receives the safest, most appropriate care possible during their most vulnerable moments.”

A Leader in Pharmacy Operations

As the Inpatient Pharmacy Clinical Supervisor, Dr. Young’s influence extends beyond individual patient rooms. He is responsible for coordinating the clinical operations for multiple departments across the hospital. This involves overseeing the implementation of new protocols and ensuring that the pharmacy department meets the evolving standards of modern healthcare.

His research background also plays a key role in his work. He has contributed to the field through peer-reviewed research, including studies on dosing accuracy for elderly patients, ensuring that the hospital's protocols are grounded in the latest scientific evidence.

Mentorship and Community Impact

Dr. Young’s impact is also felt in the development of future pharmacy professionals. At UNC Rex, he plays a pivotal role in mentoring residents, helping prepare the next wave of pharmacists to handle the complexities of critical care. Beyond the hospital walls, his dedication has earned him accolades from local organizations, including Springfield Baptist Church, which honored him for his tireless work during the challenging transitions of the healthcare landscape over the past few years.

As healthcare continues to evolve, practitioners like the Lexington-born Dr. Tramaine Young stand at the forefront. Through his blend of clinical mastery, research-driven leadership, and a "patient-first" philosophy, he continues to define what it means to be a modern healthcare hero in North Carolina. Thank you, Dr. Young, for all that you do.
