Wayne Monk inducted into the NC Bar-B-Q Hall of Fame

Wayne Monk’s name has become synonymous with barbecue.

The local legend and owner of Lexington Barbecue received the honor of being inducted into the NC Bar-B-Q Hall of Fame in a ceremony that was held at The Alliance Center in Burlington on March 01, 2024.

Monk was recognized alongside several other noteworthy names, all famous for their contributions to the sustainment of barbecue in North Carolina.

The NC Bar-B-Q Hall of Fame recognizes restaurants and cooks that make the various styles of barbecue that are popular across the state. They also acknowledge those that keep and pass on the original techniques of cooking those barbecue styles.

Monk, who is from Lexington, opened Lexington Barbecue in 1962. His efforts have helped to establish the worldwide fame of Lexington style barbecue.

There is rarely a day that the parking lot of Lexington Barbecue isn’t overflowing with vehicles for near and far.

Conveniently located off US Highway 29/70 on the aptly named Smokehouse Lane, the establishment is so well known that the restaurant is sometimes just referred to as The Hunneymonk. The origins of the name derive from the combination of Monk's name with that of his then business partner, Sonny Hunneycutt,  hence the name. Locals now just call the restaurant The Monk.

Lexington Barbecue continues to set the standard when it comes to barbecue.

Davidson Local would like to congratulate Wayne Monk on this wonderful accolade.
