What Does Love for an Educational Leader Look Like? The Beth Callicutt Story

Love, in the context of educational leadership, isn't just a warm sentiment; it's a palpable force that shapes young lives, inspires communities, and builds a legacy of positive impact. For Beth Callicutt, a former teacher and principal hailing from Lexington, North Carolina, this love has been the unwavering compass guiding her remarkable career. Her journey, steeped in dedication and a genuine passion for children, offers a powerful illustration of what it truly means to lead with heart.

Beth's story begins in her hometown of Lexington, where she graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1996. It was there, in 1993, that she met Frank Callicutt, a connection that would become central to her life. Frank vividly recalls their first date on September 10, 1993, at a Salisbury and Lexington football game. So nervous was he, he humorously admits to driving the wrong way on a highway exit ramp, only to somehow "make it look cool" by ending up at McDonald's. This early anecdote, tinged with affection, hints at the supportive partnership that would underpin Beth's professional journey.

After graduating from high school, Beth pursued her calling at Appalachian State University, graduating in 2000. Her commitment to education was further solidified during her student teaching experience at Parkway Elementary in Watauga County. In January of 2000, Beth and Frank were married, and she returned to Lexington to embark on her teaching career at Pickett Elementary School. This marked the beginning of a dedicated ascent through the ranks of education. She later taught at Charles England Intermediate School and Lexington Middle School before transitioning into leadership roles as Assistant Principal at Southwest Elementary and subsequently, Principal at Charles England.

Beth Callicutt's hard work, perseverance, and undeniable talent for fostering positive learning environments did not go unnoticed. Her dedication led to a significant opportunity in the Guilford County School System, where she now serves as Principal at Allen Jay Elementary School. This progression speaks volumes about her consistent commitment to excellence and her ability to inspire those around her.

Beyond her professional achievements, Beth's greatest attribute, according to Frank, is her role as a mother. "She is an absolute hero to all three of his girls," he proudly states. Their three daughters, Mary Lloyd (24), Annabell (23), and Abbie (19), are all graduates of Lexington, a testament to the strong foundation their parents provided. Mary, the eldest, is a marketing director for a commercial real estate firm in Winston-Salem. Annabell, the middle daughter, will be following in her mother's footsteps, teaching at Westchester Academy next year and coaching volleyball. Abbie, the youngest, working at the Monk representing and currently attending UNC Charolotte, another facet of the family's deep community roots.

When asked what motivates Beth, Frank's answer is simple and profound: "She just has a strong love for children and communities." He shares that Beth has always wanted to be a teacher since her teenage years, a lifelong aspiration that has clearly fueled her unwavering dedication. Frank adds that he has "never heard Beth complain when summer is winding down before school starts," a remarkable sentiment from someone in such a demanding profession.

As a former student of Mrs. Beth Callicutt's during her very first year at Pickett Elementary in 2000, I can personally attest to her extraordinary character. Even on days I might have inadvertently caused a "rough day," she never complained. Instead, she consistently brought an infectious positivity to her students and our community. Many of us were so inspired by her that we aspired to be "just like Mrs. Callicutt" in our own unique ways. Through her actions and her unwavering commitment, Beth Callicutt set the gold standard for what an educator and a principal should truly be. Her love for children and community isn't just a job; it's a calling she lives out every single day.
