We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence from Britain and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn’t the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776. The “Declaration” was published in papers on July 4.

A multicultural committee formed in 2012 was recently dissolved by the city of Thomasville. The unanimous vote by the council cited “over the past several years, the multicultural committee has deviated from the primary mission of promoting and embracing all of the community's cultures and has expressed interest in focusing on a more narrowly tailored group of cultures,” and in a resolution to dissolve the group.

For the third year in a row Anything For Our Youth Group is gearing up for a Juneteenth celebration set for Saturday, June 18th at 3 pm at Dunbar Park on 4th Street in Lexington. The festivities include a pageant and a creative writing contest. The historic walking tour will be led by Tyrone Terry, a local civil rights advocate that will begin at 2:30 pm.
