Uptown Lexington Street Closures Remain in Place Following May 19 Fire

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Portions of Uptown Lexington remain closed as city officials continue to assess damage from the devastating May 19 fire that impacted several downtown businesses.

According to the City of Lexington, Main Street remains closed to vehicle traffic between Center Street and First Street. First Street is also closed between Main Street and Marble Alley.

Officials said drivers can still access the portion of Main Street near Center Street that circles the courtyards, and pedestrians may continue to visit businesses that remain open along the west side of Main Street.

The closures remain in place as structural assessments continue on the fire-damaged buildings.

City officials said the affected structures remain unsafe to enter, and public safety remains the top priority while engineers and other experts evaluate the extent of the damage.

The fire, which occurred during the early morning hours of May 19, damaged multiple businesses in the heart of Uptown Lexington, including Shoto, Main Street Deli and neighboring properties. While no injuries were reported, the fire left significant structural and water damage throughout the area.

The loss has been felt across the community and beyond, with residents, business owners and supporters throughout the region continuing to share messages of encouragement and support for those affected.

City officials said the street closures will remain in effect until structural assessments are complete and conditions are deemed safe for the public.

The City of Lexington will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
