Opera LITE: American Odyssey Celebrates 250 Years of American Music at Historic Davidson County Courthouse

Music has long been the soundtrack of the American experience, telling stories of hope, struggle, faith, resilience, and celebration. On Saturday, July 11, residents will have an opportunity to experience that musical journey in one of Davidson County's most historic settings.

Piedmont Opera will present Opera LITE: American Odyssey on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the Davidson County Historical Museum, located inside the courtroom of the Historic Old Davidson County Courthouse in downtown Lexington.

The performance, made possible through the generous support of the Edward C. Smith Civic Center, is part of the nation's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary. Presented in the style of a live radio broadcast, the production guides audiences through more than two centuries of American music, connecting pivotal moments in the nation's history with the songs that helped define them.

Performed by Reverend Kenneth Alexander Pettigrew, Logan Webber, and Arianna Bohning, the program features patriotic favorites, spirituals, folk songs, Broadway classics, protest music, and Americana. Together, the selections reflect the diverse voices and traditions that have shaped the American story while celebrating the music that has united, challenged, comforted, and inspired generations.

Unlike a traditional staged opera, Opera LITE is designed to be welcoming and accessible for audiences of all backgrounds.

The series combines exceptional vocal performances with storytelling, historical context, artist conversations, and audience question-and-answer sessions. Whether attending an opera performance for the first time or returning as a longtime fan, guests can enjoy an engaging and interactive experience without the formality often associated with opera.

"I couldn't be more excited to welcome Piedmont Opera for this special performance," said Caitlin Williams-Cole, curator of the Davidson County Historical Museum. "I attended my first Opera LITE concert earlier this year and was blown away. The performers are truly world-class. I was impressed by how interactive the experience was. They entertained, educated, and connected with the audience from beginning to end. Even as someone who knew very little about opera, I left a fan, and I think you will too."

The historic courtroom provides an especially meaningful backdrop for a performance that explores the nation's legal, cultural, and musical heritage, offering audiences a unique opportunity to reflect on America's past through song.

Tickets are $15. Seating is limited, and advance purchase is recommended.
