Former Davidson County deputy arrested for third bank robbery
A former Davidson County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested in Salisbury on July 31 and charged with common law robbery of a bank, for a third time.
According to the Salisbury Police, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 31 police responded to an alarm at F&M Bank at 102 S. Avalon Drive in Salisbury. Officers who were in the area were able to detain a white male suspect as he exited the bank.
Jeffrey Dean Athey, Sr., 58, was identified by bank staff as the person who passed a note demanding money. Athey was charged with felony common law robbery and was given a $50,000 secured bond, according to police.
Athey was a deputy with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department from 2013 until 2018 when he was fired after being arrested by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department for robbing a bank in Rockwell.
After his conviction for this robbery and while he was on probation, Athey was arrested again in 2022 for allegedly robbing the same F&M bank on Avalon Drive in Salisbury involved in the recent arrest. He is currently on federal probation for the 2022 arrest, according to arrest records.
