Lexington firefighter involved in fatal shooting dies

A Lexington firefighter involved in the deadly shooting of his estranged wife, who was a Lexington police officer, has died.

According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, Zachary Rogers died on Saturday morning. Although the cause of his death was not released, he had previously sustained life-threatening injuries during a shooting incident on Dec. 17 where his estranged wife was shot and killed.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Dec. 17 the Lexington Police Department responded to a report of a shooting on Cedar Drive. When they arrived, they discovered three people who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Officer Kaitlyn Crooks was pronounced dead at the scene. Rogers was transported to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with critical injuries. Joshua Moore, who was believed to be Crooks' current boyfriend, was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither Officer Crook nor Zachary Rogers were on duty at the time of the shooting. A gun believed to be Moore’s was recovered at the scene.

The incident was being investigated by the SBI, although Rogers was never arrested or officially charged in the shooting. Officials have stated they are continuing with the investigation and will be consulting the District Attorney on any pending charges.
