Alexis Beverly Serves Up Leadership for Lexington Volleyball

Alexis Beverly didn’t exactly grow up dreaming of running volleyball practices in Lexington, but ask anyone who has seen her on the sidelines, and they’ll tell you—she was built for this role.

Her journey seemed to start by accident. Back in eighth grade at Tyro Middle, she and a friend noticed an announcement for volleyball tryouts. “We’re both tall,” her friend said. “Let’s go play,” Beverly admits she knew nothing about the game, but she fell in love immediately.

For Beverly, volleyball stood out from the start because of its team-first nature. She grew up playing basketball as well, but saw a difference between the two sports. “In basketball, one person can grab the spotlight,” she explained. “But in volleyball, it’s always a team effort—you’ve got to have that pass, set, and hit. You win together.” That sense of connection is what keeps her committed, both as a player and now as a coach.

That spark carried her through high school at Lexington, a transfer from West Davidson, and later into college at Catawba, where she double-majored in exercise science and physical education. Initially, her plan was to pursue sports medicine, including athletic training and possibly physical therapy. She worked for five years in PT and spent time with the Washington Spirit women’s soccer team. But something tugged her back to the classroom, and eventually, to her hometown.

“From the beginning, I always said I wanted to help people,” Beverly explained. “In physical therapy, I did that." But here, in the classroom and on the court, she is living her truth.

Today, Beverly teaches science at Lexington High and coaches both the middle and high school volleyball teams. She also serves as one of the school’s certified first responders—on call when a student needs vital signs checked or a health scare assessed. It’s a lot of hats, but she wears them with purpose.

Coaching, though, is where her heart beats fastest. Beverly sees herself as the coach her family has inspired her to be. She’d had—a constant support, a mentor who sticks around long after practice ends. Many say if her girls need something, whether it’s equipment, advice, or just somebody to talk to, they can call on her.

The job isn’t without its challenges. She laughs when she admits that managing “teenage girls being teenage girls” can test her patience. But she’s quick to point out that her players are also her motivation—showing up with new energy, learning how to push past adversity, and setting their sights higher every season.

This year, Beverly believes the team’s energy is stronger than ever. “Last year we were good, but this year we’re goal-driven,” she said. “Every match we go in with the mindset that if our energy can beat a team, we can beat them on the court.” The team has already marked victories, including a big opening 5 to 1 season and they’re hungry for more.

The dream? A conference championship—something Lexington volleyball has never claimed. “That’s the goal,” Beverly said plainly. “Playoffs, conference title—we want it.”

She’s quick to share credit, though, especially with her assistant coach, Rita Spence. “From the first day we clicked. She’s been my sidekick ever since,” Beverly said.

At home, Beverly lives with her parents—and six pet fish. Her dad, Ronnie, is former LSHS Athletic Director and now oversees facilities operations for Winston-Salem State University, and her mom, Tracy is completing her administrative internship at Southwest Elementary.

Alexis laughs about dating ambitions. Her volleyball girls try to play matchmaker. She insists her nieces (and soon to be) nephew keep her plenty busy for now. Her decisions are deeply rooted in faith.

When the lights come on in the gym and her players flash their “W” hand signs after a win, it’s clear Beverly has found her match—rooted in Lexington, helping young women grow stronger one set at a time.
