Community Spotlight: Lexington’s Own Ryland Gilmore Shines Bright as Fox 8 Weather Kid

By Thomas Martin Sr.

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Do you believe that children are the essence of the future? Of course, I believe that they are. They are the architects of tomorrow, the dreamers who will one day shape our world with the very aspirations they nurture today. For example, think back to when you were a kid; you likely wanted to do magical things, harboring a sense of urgency and impatience as you waited to become an adult just to pursue those dreams.

That magic was on full display recently for anyone tuning into Fox 8. Like many in our community, I vividly at times watch Fox 8, often keeping an eye out for the local segment featuring "Van’s Weather Kid." It is always a joy to see young people stepping into the spotlight, but a recent broadcast offered something truly special for those of us here in Lexington.

Looking at the television screen, I saw a well-dressed young man by the name of Ryland Gilmore. It was a moment of local pride to realize this poised youngster happens to be from right here in Lexington, North Carolina. Ryland, the son of Brianna Gilmore and Demetri Gilmore, is just 8 years of age and a rising third grader at Southwest Elementary. Yet, despite his youth, he commanded the screen with a presence that rivaled many adults.

Watching Gilmore’s set yesterday, I must say I was highly impressed with his responses to Mr. Van Denton’s questions. It wasn’t just that he answered; it was how he answered—with clarity, politeness, and a spark of genuine personality. During the interview portion, we learned that Gilmore is a well-rounded kid who enjoys the things many rising third graders do: recess, science, baseball, soccer, and the popular video game Roblox. It painted a picture of a happy, active childhood.

However, the segment took a turn from the typical to the extraordinary when the topic shifted to the future. Mr. Van asked Gilmore what he wanted to be when he grew up. Without hesitation, Ryland stated that he wanted to become the President of the United States. But it was his reasoning that truly resonated. He didn't say he wanted to be President for the fame, the power, or the title. He stated that he wanted the position so that he could be able to help the homeless and give money to those in need.

I was blown away by his heartfelt responses and frankly, in shock. In a world often consumed by self-interest, here was an 8-year-old boy whose primary motivation for seeking the highest office in the land was pure altruism. Watching Gilmore navigate through the forecast later was equally awesome. With his confidence alone, I already knew he was going to do great. He was dressed for success, looking every bit the leader he aspires to be.

To Ryland’s parents, Brianna and Demetri: his future is just around the corner. Keep preparing Ryland for harvest. You both have done an amazing job thus far. Raising a child who is not only confident and articulate but also deeply compassionate is a significant achievement.

Ryland is a constant reminder for us as parents to stay consistent and keep our kids' minds busy and engaged. The more they know, the more you know. It is our responsibility to water these seeds of greatness so they can bloom.

Mom and dad are so proud of the amazing young man you are becoming! Dream BIG. We will always be here to cheer you on! We love you.

Thanks, Mom and Dad, for giving us all the opportunity to meet Mr. Ryland Gilmore. He was all that and more!
