Press Release: Fentanyl toxicity death results in murder charge

On Thursday, October 6, 2022, Deputies with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the Fair Grove community of Davidson County in reference to a death investigation. Upon arrival, Deputies located an individual male deceased inside of the residence from a suspected drug overdose.

Detectives with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office initiated a lengthy investigation, receiving assistance from the Thomasville Police Department and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. During the course of the investigation, the North Carolina State Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of the male death to be drug (fentanyl) toxicity.

As a result of the investigation, on Sunday, September 3, 2023, Ian Eugene Butler, who was already in the custody of the Davidson County Detention Center, was served with a warrant for arrest charging him with one count of 2nd-degree murder and one count of death by distribution. Butler is currently being held in the Davidson County Detention Center without bond.
