Two parents charged with child abuse and improper storage of firearm

Davidson County-The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with Davidson County Schools and Child Protective Services, has completed an investigation concerning the welfare of several minor children following multiple reports of concern.

Initial reports were received in late September 2025, and involved allegations that prompted a multi-agency response. During the course of the investigation, authorities confirmed the immediate safety of the children and began working with child protection officials to address ongoing concerns.

Further developments in early October resulted in coordinated efforts between school staff, School Resource Officers and investigators to locate individuals connected to the case. This included activity on school property, where additional safety risks were identified and addressed swiftly.

As a result of the investigation, evidence was obtained indicating the presence of unsecured firearms in locations accessible to children, including school grounds. Search warrants were executed, and two adults, identified as Brittany Leigh Ann McClendon (mother), 30 years old, and William Aaron Turner (stepfather), 43 years old, were taken into custody without incident.

On October 3, 2025, Turner was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of possession of a firearm on educational property and two counts of child abuse. On October 3, 2025, McClendon was arrested and charged with two counts of aiding and abetting possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of possession of a firearm on educational property and two counts of child abuse. McClendon was issued a secured $50,000.00 bond and Turner was issued a secured $150,000.00, set by the magistrate. Both have pending court appearances scheduled for November 24, 2025, in the Davidson County District Court, Lexington, North Carolina. The children involved are now in a safe environment, and appropriate services are being provided.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the cooperation of Davidson County Schools and other community partners whose quick action ensured the safety of the children and the broader school community.

Per North Carolina General Statute 15A-532, Judicial officials determine conditions for the release of persons in Judicial proceedings. Bond amounts are not set by members of law enforcement. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
