City of Lexington: Heavy Storms Lead to Wastewater Overflow into Swearing Creek
Heavy storms that brought flooding to the Lexington area on July 23 resulted in the discharge of an estimated 71,250 gallons of untreated wastewater into Swearing Creek, according to a notice released Friday by the City of Lexington.
The overflow occurred at the Swearing Creek Pump Station near Brown Street Extension after floodwaters affected the wastewater collection system. City officials said the discharge lasted for approximately 4.75 hours before it was contained once floodwaters receded.
The untreated wastewater entered Swearing Creek, which is part of the Yadkin River Basin.
Under North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C, owners or operators of wastewater collection or treatment systems must issue a public notice when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches the surface waters of the state.
The North Carolina Division of Water Resources was notified of the incident on July 23 and is reviewing the matter.
The City of Lexington has not released additional information regarding any potential environmental impacts or cleanup measures related to the overflow.
