Lexington City Schools Prepares to Welcome Students for the School Year

Ready for a Strong Start: Lexington City Schools Prepares to Welcome Students for the 2026–2027 School Year
District Builds on a Summer of Student Learning, Community Partnerships, and Preparation as Students Return August 10th.
As Lexington City Schools prepares to welcome students back on Monday, August 10, the district is building on a summer of student learning, workforce development, community partnerships, and preparation to ensure every student begins the 2026–2027 school year ready to succeed.
While students have been enjoying summer break, Lexington City Schools employees have remained hard at work preparing classrooms, supporting summer programs, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring schools are ready to welcome students for another successful year of learning.
"As we prepare to welcome students back, our focus remains on providing every child with the opportunities, support, and high-quality educational experience they deserve," said Dr. Ron Anthony, Superintendent of Lexington City Schools. "This school year, our work will continue to be guided by three expectations: High Expectations. Accountability. Urgency. These expectations will guide our decisions, strengthen our schools, and reinforce our commitment to student success."
A Summer Focused on Student Success
Throughout the summer, Lexington City Schools continued investing in students through career readiness opportunities, summer nutrition programs, and community partnerships.
This year, 19 students participated in paid internships through the district's Career and Technical Education Summer Internship Program, gaining valuable hands-on experience with local businesses, government agencies, and Lexington City Schools departments. Students explored future career pathways while developing workplace skills through partnerships with Davidson-Davie Community College, Davidson County Government, the City of Lexington, Siemens Mobility, EGGER, the J. Smith Young YMCA, Lexington Utilities, and several district departments.
The district also continued providing free meals to children through the SUN Meals Program, which operates through July 30. The program is currently serving an average of approximately 75 children each day across all meal sites, helping ensure students have access to nutritious meals while school is out of session.
Preparing for the First Day of School
Students will return for the first day of school on Monday, August 10.
Before classes begin, families are encouraged to attend Districtwide Open House on Thursday, August 6, providing an opportunity to meet teachers, visit classrooms, and prepare for the new school year.

Elementary Schools
12:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Lexington Middle School
3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Lexington Senior High School
4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Families are also encouraged to ensure students have received all required immunizations before the first day of school. Information about upcoming immunization opportunities is available on the district website and through Lexington City Schools' communication channels.
Community Partnerships Helping Students Start Strong
Lexington City Schools is grateful for its continued partnership with the Cory Holt Foundation, which will host its annual Back-to-School Giveaway on Saturday, August 1, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the parking lot behind Lexington Senior High School.
The event will provide school supplies and other essential resources to help students begin the school year prepared and ready to learn.
Important Back-to-School Reminders
To help families prepare for a successful start to the school year, Lexington City Schools encourages parents and guardians to review several important district resources and expectations before students return.
Families whose students ride a school bus are encouraged to download the Where's the Bus mobile app before the first day of school. The app allows parents and guardians to track their child's school bus in real time and receive more accurate arrival information throughout the school year.
The district's Clear Backpack Policy remains in effect for the 2026–2027 school year. Students may bring one clear backpack made of clear plastic, vinyl, or similar transparent material. Students may also carry one additional small bag measuring no larger than 6 inches by 9 inches by 5 inches, along with one non-clear lunchbox. Additional information, including policy exceptions, is available on the district website.
The district's Cell Phone Policy also remains in effect to help protect instructional time and minimize distractions. Cell phones are not permitted during the instructional day at elementary and middle schools. At Lexington Senior High School, students may use cell phones only during their designated lunch period.
