Hospice of Davidson County breaks fundraising records at golf tournament

Hospice of Davidson County (HODC) raised a record-breaking amount in their 15th annual golf tournament fundraiser to support quality end-of-life care for our community.

HODC held its 15th annual golf tournament fundraiser on Thursday, April 18th at Sapona Golf, Swim and Tennis Club. The event raised $20, 656.28 in profits, a record-breaking amount for the tournament. These funds will be used to support HODC in ensuring quality end-of-life care is locally accessible to every person within our community.

The charity event was a 4-person, Captain’s Choice tournament with a shotgun start for both morning and afternoon tee times. Golfers from 29 teams registered to compete in the tournament that included opportunities for additional activities. Jeff Crittenden, two-time winner of the World Long Drive (WLD) Masters Division Championship, offered demonstrations and assistance to teams. Sapona Club staff facilitated putting, long drive, and closest to pin contests.

Participants were served breakfast biscuits from the BBQ Shack in Thomasville, coffee from Black Chicken Coffee and Gifts in Lexington and lunch from Shanna’s Catering and Confections in Midway.

The tournament concluded with an awards ceremony presenting trophies to members of the first and second place teams, as well as the putting, long drive and closest to pin contests. The winning team of Richard Strickland, Gary Younts, Adam Younts and BT Warford, were the inaugural team to initiate the new tradition of sporting a bright, lime green blazer during the ceremony to celebrate their victory.

The second-place team of John Christian Luxury Real Estate, consisting of John Beck, Jacob May, Lanny Hedrick and Jordan Hedrick, demonstrated their golf skills and hearts for giving by not only playing hard but also serving as a GOLD sponsor for the tournament. Additional tournament winners included: Mike Nance (putting contest winner) and Ryan Budwine (long drive and closest to pin winner).

“The day was a rousing success in every sense. We are excited by the funds raised, and we are overwhelmed by the community support that made this event possible,” commented Christina Davenport, Director of Community Relations. “It’s amazing to see so many sponsors, participants, and volunteers come together to support us. While many people are hesitant to talk about death and dying, we believe everyone deserves local, expert, and compassionate end-of-life care. And this event shows our community supports us in this pursuit.”

BREAKFAST Sponsors, Michelle Epley and Jill Curione at Southern Key Realty, for their support and volunteerism throughout the tournament.

“Raising over $20,000 was truly a community effort! In 2023 we provided 676 days of charity care to individuals unable to pay for end-of-life care. In the first quarter of 2024 we provided 279 days of charity care. There is clearly a need not only for excellent but also accessible end-of-life care. We are honored to fulfill this need for our community.”
