Thomasville, NC, July 24, 2025. At the City Council meeting on Monday, July 21, the Thomasville City Council agreed unanimously (Councilman Thrift abstaining) to lease the former Parks & Recreation Administration building located at 1 East Main Street to Communities in Schools (CIS) for a period of five years.
CIS Executive Director Hunter Thrift approached the City Council regarding the possibility of leasing the underutilized facility after being informed that the Thomasville City School System was canceling the non-profit's lease at 19 East Guilford Street and was requiring them to move out by early August.
For over 30 years, CIS has offered support and assistance to by providing academic resources, meals, and school supplies, as well as vital emotional and social support.
The City strongly supports these efforts, and many of its departments currently have partnerships with CIS to help enable its crucial work. When the City Council became aware of the dire situation that the non-profit was in, they immediately took action and provided a facility where this important work could continue. Utilizing this building keeps CIS within the downtown area, making it convenient for the families they serve and keeping it visible in the community. It also provides a location for this essential non-profit to continue to serve the children of Thomasville, which is an appropriate use of the facility.
