Lexington City Schools welcome new superintendent
The Lexington City Board of Education has selected Dr. Ron Anthony as the next superintendent of Lexington City Schools, voting April 21 to approve his appointment. School board leaders said the decision signals a new chapter for the district, the closed session preceding the vote was brief.
Dr. Anthony, who will officially begin his role on May 1, 2026, brings more than 20 years of experience in public education, including leadership at both the school and district levels.
Anthony’s experience includes working in districts that often operate with fewer resources while competing with larger, nearby systems for staff, funding and student enrollment. That perspective is especially relevant in Lexington City Schools, which operates independently within Davidson County and faces many of the same pressures, particularly around teacher recruitment, retention and long-term sustainability.
Leadership changes at the superintendent level often shape the direction of a school system for years. In Lexington City Schools, the superintendent plays a central role in setting academic priorities, managing district finances and staffing, building relationships with families and community partners, and navigating state-level education policy. The Board’s decision reflects not just a personnel change, but a strategic choice about the district’s future direction.
Dr. Anthony will also step into ongoing challenges facing the district, including navigating state-level funding decisions, working with county leaders on local funding allocations, and addressing school repair and construction needs across facilities.
“Funding is also a major issue for rural school districts,” Anthony said in a previous interview. “After participating in the Homegrown Leaders program, I’m more aware of the opportunities for alternative funding available to rural communities, such as state and federal grants and other strategies that can be used to manage budgets while still serving the needs of the students. He pointed to his school district’s decision to consolidate two elementary schools into one to save money and offset the loss of funds received during the COVID-19 pandemic as an example.”
Following the vote, Dr. Anthony was introduced alongside his family, marking his first public step into the Lexington City Schools community. District leaders have framed the moment as one of continuity and growth, welcoming him to what is often referred to as “the Hive,” a nod to the system’s Yellow Jacket identity.
Dr. Anthony steps into the role during a period of ongoing change in public education, as districts balance academic recovery, staffing shortages and shifting expectations from families and the state. His experience may shape how Lexington City Schools approaches those challenges in the months ahead.
